Grit sand is an extremely useful aggregate in the building trade. It’s the coarsest sand you can get with grit sizes ranging from 0.06mm to 3mm. The coarseness makes it perfect for floor screeds, paving and flagstone projects. It can also be used as a bulking agent in mortar and concrete in combination with finer sand.
You would use grit sand as a base for paving, block stones and flagstones. It compacts extremely well to create a subbase that is rigid and strong. The coarsely graded mix makes it best for applications where rigidity is needed. Where finer sand allows some movement, grit sand stays compact to maintain structure.
Grit sand can also be used in landscaping projects. It is useful as a subbase for creating a level platform for gravel driveways, patios and paths. Another use case is as a planting filler where grit sand is used to aerate soil. However, while these use cases are fairly common, grit sand is mainly used for block and cobble paving.
Grit sand is also known as sharp sand. The two terms can be used interchangeably, although in general, grit sand is considered the coarsest product.
