Building sand is generally used to provide bulk to other construction materials, like concrete, mortar and road surfaces. Because it’s soft and fine, it’s most suited to masonry work with brick and stone. You can also mix building sand with sharp sand or grit sand to create a complete aggregate for cement and cement mortar.
Building sand IS NOT suitable as a laying course or subbase for paving because it is too soft and fine. The fineness allows too much movement in applications where an extremely compact subbase is needed. With paving, you want to use sharp sand for the subbase and paving sand to fill the joints. This will give you a solid surface.
You would use building sand (also known as soft sand) for bricklaying and other types of masonry work. The fineness gives the cement / mortar mix a desirable surface finish, and it also helps the cement conform to the stone to create a tight bond. This is necessary to make sure bricks stay put and don’t move.
Building sand can also be used for drainage, although it isn’t the best and should be mixed with coarser sand like sharp sand for maximum drainage. This mix can be used to create a base for paths, driveways and patios with a gravel topper.
